The challenge to the designer, therefore, is to reflect the almost indefinable criteria for what is beauty, which is always being redefined by nearly every person on this planet, in his work. We also set ourselves this challenge, as part of our aesthetic field research; and asked experts in our various Mercedes-Benz Design Centres around the world to give us their personal perception and definition of perfection, beauty and how they are perceived.
Although we have not yet put the resulting film of the interview series out in the public domain, we are happy to give you a flavour of them here. As an example - the interior designer Francesca Sangalli, at the Italia Advanced Design Studio in Como, answered the question on what is beauty thus: "It's a bit like what Charles Bukowski once said: lyricism is what happens when there could be no other way of expressing it.“
Or Sangalli's colleague Chiara Pleterksi, whose answer to the question on how beauty is perceived ran: "That's really dependent on your own
inner being, your own feelings; it's something much deeper…it's not something simple, but actually more complex and more intellectual, too.“
